Commerce Square - a rectangle, surrounded by arcades, with stairs leading down to the river. The area is often called the Palace, as there was a royal palace, built by Manuel I and destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1755. At the site of the palace built building with graceful arcades
In the center stands on a high pedestal of the equestrian statue of King reformer José I, who was the Minister of the Marquis de Pombal.
On the south side of the square rise the two square towers. The road leads past them to the river Tagus. Opposite is the majestic Arc de Triomphe.
