Grodno State Historical and Archaeological Museum was opened on December 9, 1922 in the house of the former vice-governor of the initiative and under the guidance of an outstanding historian, archaeologist and ethnographer Józef Yodkovskogo. He laid the foundation for an impressive museum collection, conducting archaeological excavations the lower church of the XII century, collecting unique pieces of art, old books and coins.

In 1926, the museum received the collection of insects, minerals and shells, which was brought from America and donated to the museum Stanislav Zhivna. Now the natural exposure to the branch of the museum is located in New Castle.

Unfortunately, in the years of the Nazi occupation during World War II museum funds have been hit hard by the predatory plundering invaders. Restoration of the museum began immediately after the liberation from Nazi troops Grodno. The doors of the museum reopened to visitors in 1945.

Now Grodno State Historical Archives Museum houses one of the most impressive collections of the Republic of Belarus. Its assets include more than 190 thousand exhibits.
