Museum of Fine Arts, which was opened August 11, 1839, is the Most Ancient art gallery not only in Granada but also throughout Spain. Like many museums, it began to gather his collection of items confiscated from various monasteries or religious orders. This was done in order to save the works of art kept in religious institutions.

The museum's collections are presented mainly paintings and sculptures from the 15th century. One of the most ancient exhibits - a sculpture of Santa Maria de la Alhambra. The museum houses a large exhibition of works by Alonso Cano, and his disciples, which occupies two rooms. There is a separate room, which presents the work relating to the 15th century, the hall with works of painters of the 17th century, Hall of Contemporary Art, dedicated to the paintings by contemporary artists of Granada.

Over time, the museum and its collections were transferred from place to place. Initially, the museum was located in a former Dominican convent of Santa Cruz la Real. Then the collections were moved to the building of the Military Institute, then - in the Town Hall, and later - in the building of Casa-de-Castril, where the museum shared the premises occupied by the Archaeological Museum and the Academy of Fine Arts until 1923. In 1958, the Museum of Fine Arts moved into the palace of Charles V, which is one of the attractions of the famous Alhambra.

In 1994, the museum was closed for restoration work. In 2003, the Museum of Fine Arts in Granada again opened its doors to visitors.
