Chateau du Brest - architectural and historical monument, the construction of which began in the III century the Romans and lasted almost until the XVII century, when the castle was fortified by the famous French fortifier engineer Sebastien Le Marquis de Vauban Prêtre.
Over the years, the Chateau du Brest and became a royal residence and even a prison. During the Second World War, the castle was partially destroyed, but then fully restored. Since 1923, the castle has the status of a historical monument of France.
The castle complex comprises seven towers, which are interconnected. Inside the stone rings is another fortress with underground casemates and the chapel. The thickness of the castle walls up to 12 meters. In the southern part of the castle remains of masonry made by the Romans. Visit the castle tower offers start from Magdalena, from the upper level which offers a beautiful view of the city.
The castle is located on the banks of Penfeld, opposite him is another famous town fortifications - Tanguy tower with a museum of the history of Brest until 1939. Part of the castle is closed to visit, as there are the headquarters of the Maritime Command and the Maritime Prefecture. Perhaps the castle is the world's oldest existing military facility.
In another part of the castle housed the National Maritime Museum. Within its walls are stored navigation instruments and models of ships, seascape paintings, sculptures of famous seafarers, nasal wooden figures adorned the court.
