The history of the basilica began in 1288, when it was erected on the spot where previously housed a chapel. Its construction involved Villeik holy, which temple consecrated later.

Despite the fact that the history of the Basilica of more than one century, its appearance during this period has not changed. Its rapid development of the temple, named in honor of St. Lambert of Maastricht, received only since 1380. That's when William I moved his residence to the city of Dusseldorf.

For a long time kept in the Basilica of the various Christian holy sites, among which are the relics of Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna, the icons and relics of some important personalities of the history of the church, such as Lambert and Villeika, as well as one of the martyrs - Patroclus Trikassinskogo. Among the variety of items you can find antiques, previously used in the church.

Currently, the Basilica of St. Lambert is perfectly preserved representative Romanesque architectural style, the signs of which can be seen in virtually every detail of this magnificent building. Entrance to the temple was built according to the design of a talented professor named Ewald Mathare. As the performance of the main altar of the Baroque style was chosen, it was decorated with statues of several saints.

Before entering the sacristy you can see the painting of the second half of the XV century. In the Ambulatory are four altar made of alabaster and black marble. The most valuable part of the basilica is considered to be the tabernacle in Gothic style, located close to one of the pillars of the temple.
