Falasarna - Greek port city on the northwest coast of Crete. This area probably was inhabited from the Minoan times and ancient Falasarna established no later than the 6th century BC The first written sources mentioning the town date back to 350 BC

Falasarna was a very independent and economically developed city, and one of the most influential policies Crete. The city-state prospered thanks to well-established trade relations and had its own coin embossing, in which one side was carved image of a woman, and the other - a trident and the words "FA".

Massive stone walls surrounded by not only the city but also its harbor, which makes it very well protected and easy to mariners. The city port was established in the lagoon and the sea was connected to two artificial channels. On the Cape, which was above the harbor, has a well-fortified acropolis on whose territory preserved many fragments of ancient buildings (among them the temple Diktiny).

Because of constant strife and earthquakes, the city gradually began to decay. This has led to the flourishing piracy in this region. During this period, the island is already dominated by the Romans, who made every effort to eradicate piracy in the vast Mediterranean. As a result, about 69-67 years BC they destroyed the city and port of Falasarna, and natural disasters have been pushed civilization of these places. More than this port city was never used.

The first archaeological excavations were begun in 1966 under the leadership of Yiannis Tsedakisa. In addition to the ancient ruins were discovered and many ancient burial sites with valuable artefacts.

Today Falasarna more commonly known as an excellent sandy beach (one of the best beaches in western Crete). It is quite popular among the islanders, and among the guests of Greece.
