The small island is covered with pine forests Vidoz is just half a mile from the old harbor town of Corfu. Known in ancient times as the island of Hera Vidoz has an important place in the history of Corfu.

Around 80 AD Here it was built the first Christian church of St. Stephen. But unfortunately, the church has not survived to our days, as it was destroyed by the British. In the ruins of a mosaic floor were found ancient vessels. This suggests that the church was built on the ruins of an ancient temple.

During the Venetian domination (15-18 centuries), a special tunnel that connected the island of Corfu Vidoz. Convicted criminals of the Old Fortress crossed through this tunnel to the island, which was a kind of "Alcatraz" for Corfu. Some remains of the prison buildings have survived to the present day.

Vidos Island has always been a strategically important object in the defense of Corfu. After the Venetians, the island was thoroughly fortified by the French, from whom the name remains. Later, the British captured Vidoz and destroyed almost all the old buildings and fortifications. In 1824 it began the construction of a large-scale, on which the United Kingdom has allocated an astronomical amount of money. So Vidos island turned into a fortress with a perfect defense system. However, following the accession of the Greek island of Corfu to the fortifications were destroyed.

The island is Serbian Mausoleum - a monument in 1232 by the Serbian soldiers who died of the plague and hunger, protecting the island of Corfu. There's always flowers, candles and photographs and special commemorative book, in which you can enter your gratitude.

Today, the picturesque island Vidos is a favorite destination of tourists. Pine forests and secluded beaches create a unique atmosphere. And in the only tavern you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine and spectacular views of the sea and the town of Corfu.
