The museum was opened in Maya Cancun relatively recently and quickly became one of the most visited tourist destinations. The opening ceremony took place on November 1, 2012 thanks to the famous the May calendar on which was predicted "doomsday" on 21 December 2012. The initiator of the museum became Felipe Calderón - Mexican President. His area - more than 5 thousand square meters - the museum can easily compete with the most popular venues, beaches and hotels of Cancun. Its construction took six years and $ 15 million.
The museum has more than 300 household objects, folk art, in addition it reflects knowledge of the Maya in the sciences - astronomy and mathematics. One of the most valuable exhibits is considered to be the remains of the skeleton of a woman, whose age is about 10 thousand years. They were found in 2002 in one of the underwater caves of Cancun.
In the museum are now 350 of interesting artifacts. Some of these historians have studied for decades. Among the exhibits have never before shown to the public. The museum's collection is constantly updated thanks to the archaeological works in the cities of the Maya.
The permanent exhibition is housed in two halls. Another room is used for temporary exhibitions of international scope. The first exhibits that greet visitors at the entrance to the museum are the skeletons of ancient people who lived presumably 14 thousand years ago. They were discovered in 2001 in the caves of Tulum. The first room tells the story of the Mayan civilization. Here you will see the images and figures of the Indians, who have been recreated by scientists on the basis of materials from archaeological excavations. The second room visitors are introduced to the architectural and cultural values of the people, local artifacts - a variety of tools and objects of art.
Museum staff believe that will visit the museum every year about one million people.
