Local History Museum named after SN Porshnyakova located in the town of Borovichi, is one of the oldest museums in the Novgorod region. In May 1918, a decision was made about his organization at the College of the county Department of Education. The establishment of the museum was held in 1919. At that moment, the bulk of the collection was presented to the museum collection of a secondary school in Borovichi. Originally the museum was called "Borovichi Museum of proletarian art, industry and science named t. Reppo."

The museum exhibition was opened in 1921. The basis for its creation was the collection of the museum named after Gogol and Zhukovsky, which was organized in 1910. The museum exhibition is literally reproduced gradually leaving noble life, presenting books, furniture, paintings, as well as various local industries: wood processing, leather, knitwear, ceramic; also in the exposition it was presented to the department of nature.

In the period from 1927 to 1952 was director of the museum Porshnyakov SN - Grandson of Privy Councillor of St. Petersburg, the son of the famous professor of medicine. In 1929 he became the author of the first Porshnyakov local history exhibition. During the Great Patriotic War museum collections were moved a small part in the Kirov region. The museum exhibition was restored at the end of 1942. Since 1975, the museum became a branch of the Novgorod State United Museum. In 1989, the opening of the second exhibition, sponsored by LV Podobed, GA Alexander and MN Petri. In addition, in the same year the museum was named SN Porshnyakova

Throughout the 1990s, in the museum exposition has added new items and stands, in which the theme of the history of consecrated №270 camp internees and prisoners of war during the 1942-1951 period. In the first years of its existence, the museum of local lore has held a variety of areas. For example, after its regular opening in 1928, the museum received for their needs permanent space located in the street of the October Revolution. In the period from 1973 to 1978, the building for the museum was rebuilt in the same place. Another building was given to the museum in 1984, located on Dzerzhinsky Street, where the museum exhibition halls. After the reconstruction was completed, but here placed a major museum exhibition. At the present time, namely in 2010, Borovichi Museum of Local History S. Porshnyakova stored and maintained their cultural activities in a new building on the street Dzerzhinsky. Today the museum exposition, tells in detail about the historical development of the region, which lasted until 1917. At present, the museum staff plan to create a new exhibition, which tells about the historical development of the Soviet period of time. In 2011, the museum fund has made more than 20850 items.

During the 2010-2011 Regional Museum actively participated in various international conferences. In addition, the museum was designed by a methodical plan for local history and the lessons of history in more remote from the town of Borovichi schools.
