Bamberg is a fairly large number of churches, one of the oldest of them is the Church of St. James, which is located in the city center near the Old Town Hall. The construction of this magnificent temple began in the XI century, when the Bishop Herman I. This was a three-nave basilica, made in Romanesque style, is only slightly younger than the Cathedral of Bamberg.

Work on the construction of the church dragged on for years and ended only in the period when the city was at the head of the famous bishop by the name of Otto I Bamberg. Initially, the temple was outside the city walls and served as the place where many pilgrims could come. They came here because there was a famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela - North Spanish city, where the tomb of the Apostle James. According to the existing tradition, in 44 sailed the boat back to the body of the apostle.

Only in the XVIII century church decorated facade, made in the architectural style of the Baroque. In the same period there was a great beauty in the fresco interior of the church, it is located above sredokrestiem. There are scenes that reflect the moments of life of the Apostle James. At the end of the XIX century, the church has undergone restructuring, but it tried to do so to preserve all of its unique elements.

In order to shape the Church of St. James for many years delighted tourists and residents with its grandeur and beauty, in the 90-ies of XX century, the church underwent extensive restoration. Currently, this is the only Roman temple in Bamberg, made in the style of architecture. The church tower is decorated with five bells, two of them were cast in the XIV century by an unknown master.
