This structure several titles - House tree of life, home crafts, home of Adam and Eve. But most of all it is known as the home of Adam. In 1922 the building was declared a historic monument, today there are several companies and stores where you can buy handicrafts made by local craftsmen.
Adam's House is located in the center of Angers, at the intersection of Mono with an area of Sainte-Croix. The building was built at the end of the XV century in a style that can not be confused with any other. The combination of wooden beams and stone masonry plastered with unique carved figures adorning the walls and windows make this building a very interesting example of medieval half-timbered architecture. The name of the house was due to the sculptural image of the famous biblical story of Adam and Eve tasted of the apple of knowledge. It can be seen in the corner of the first floor. From historical documents it is known that the house is a building called Adam already in the XVII century.
Location of the house at the crossroads allowed his owners (one of the first owners was a local pharmacist) to decorate the facade of carved figures of the two six-story building - two floors higher than neighboring houses. The figures carved with great skill and humor, portrayed as a biblical and secular characters - among them one can see the silhouettes of the saints, musicians, lovers, mythical animals - centaurs and chimeras.
Adam's House is also reflected in the literature - in the work of Anatole France's "Under the Elms city." It is interesting that in France there is another building, called the House of Adam and Eve. It is located in Nice, it was built in the second half of the XVI century and is decorated with a bas-relief in the grisaille technique with images of men and women, whom the townspeople believe Adam and Eve expelled from paradise already.
