This steamer owned Russian companies engaged in trade and shipping company, and for many years he did travel to the Black Sea, carrying passengers and various goods. But it was another ship, it is not peace, but a difficult heroic destiny.

When the war with the Turks in the Russian 1877 - 1878 years, it was the question of the need to increase the Russian navy. Steamship "Vesta" was bought and remodeled by the government for military operations: equipped with modern tools, the latest control devices, mines. The ship's crew recruited volunteers, was appointed commander Baranov NM, and the steamer "Vesta" has become a light cruiser.

July 11th, 1877 the steamer "Vesta" in Konstanz has met with the Turkish fleet battleship "Fethi-Bulend", which had a strong artillery and more powerful armor. It was not easy to decide the captain-lieutenant Baranov, really conscious of the power of the enemy, to join the battle.
