New Castle in Grodno built in 1734-1751 under the project of Karl Friedrich Pёppelmana Rococo. New Royal Palace was built opposite the Old. This magnificent residence Grodno intended for the Polish King Augustus III.
The royal residence was modest on the outside and chic inside. There were arranged diplomatic receptions, royal feasts and lavish balls. In one part of the palace are the royal apartments, the other - the Diet met. After 1750 a chapel was built.
Palace played a great historical role - it is there in the last Sejm in 1793 signed an agreement on the division of the Commonwealth between Prussia and Russia. In 1795 the Polish King and Grand Duke of Lithuania Stanisław August Poniatowski abdicated and lived here for 2 more years.
At a time when the Grodno belonged to the Russian Empire, the palace were the barracks and hospital. In the first year of World War II the palace almost completely burnt as a result of falling bombs. In 1950, for the reconstruction of the New Castle took Soviet architect V. Varaskin. After the restoration of the building has become a classic shape. Up until 1990, there was a Grodno regional committee of the PBC.
At present, old and new castles are combined into a single palace and park complex, and connected by a bridge over the River Neman. They located the exposition of historical and archaeological museum and a library named Kara. Recently I began working here as a branch of the Wedding Palace. Grodno Now the couple can marry a king.
